What Sport Did You Play Before This?

Unlike "how long have you been playing," which just gets you a number, this one gets you a story.

What Sport Did You Play Before This?

Walk onto any pickleball court and you'll notice something: almost nobody grew up playing pickleball. It's a sport built entirely out of converts. Which is exactly why "what sport did you play before this?" might be the single best conversation starter in a pickleball game, it's not small talk, it's basically a personality quiz.

The tennis crowd brings the serve technique and the court sense, but often fights the urge to hit everything like it's a groundstroke. They're the ones getting reminded not to smash every third shot.

The badminton players have the fastest hands on the court, no question. Their reflexes at the net are unfair, but they sometimes have to unlearn the wristy, flicky shots that don't translate the same way with a paddle.

Table tennis converts bring incredible touch and soft hands dinking comes naturally to them in a way it doesn't for most beginners. Spin control is second nature.

Basketball and volleyball players usually bring the footwork and court awareness. They're used to reading angles and moving as a unit with a partner, which makes doubles click for them faster.

Racquetball and squash players already understand the "controlled aggression" pickleball rewards they just have to adjust to a much bigger court and a much slower ball.

People with zero racquet-sport background are often the most fun to watch improve, because everything is new and they're not fighting old habits — just building good ones from scratch.

Try It Next Time You're Waiting for a Court

Next time you're stuck in the queue with a stranger, skip "how long have you been playing" and go straight for "what sport did you play before this?" It's a better question, it gets a better answer, and more often than not, you'll walk away with a story instead of a stat.

See you on the court!
